Chile con Hval ( Whale)

Norway is known for their love of whale meat. Whale meat has been used for centuries dating back to the viking era. I though it would be cool to make a fusion between tex-mex and norwegian cuisine.

Whale meat has a special taste and texture. It has a fishy metallic taste and the texture resembles beef. This meat is an acquired taste. ( I love it of course! ). Laying in our freezer here at work I had kilos of whale meat and I had a group of 30 priests that were coming to eat. They love to eat spicy Mexican food so I had to think of something special that would be hearty and tasty. Thats when I thought of chile con hval!

Here is my version of:

Chile con carne/ HVAL

Ingredients:

  • 400 g hval meat cut in strips
  • 2 tbs butter for frying
  • 1 finely chopped onion
  • 3 garlic cloves finely chopped
  • 1 finely chopped jalapeño
  • 1 can of crushes tomatoes
  • 1 can of brown beans/ salad beans
  • 3 tbs tomato puree
  • 2 tbs cumin
  • 2 tbs chipotle powder
  • 1 tbs oregano
  • 1 tbs smoked paprika
  • 1 tbs salt
  • 2 tsp pepepr
  • 1 tbs choptle in adobo sauce
  • 2 dl water
  • 1 bundle of fresh chopped coriander

Instructions:

  1. In a pot you fry the butter with the onion, garlic and jalapeno.
  2. Add all the dried spices and stir.
  3. Then you add the meat and brown on all sides.
  4. Add the tomato puree and stir in well.
  5. Pour in the crushes tomatoes, chipotle in adobo sauce and water.
  6. Let cook for an hour.
  7.  Add the beans and coriander and let cook for another 5 mins.
  8. Adjust the taste with salt.

This goes great with avocado dip and quesadillas!

Chile con Hval

Ingredienser:

  • 400 gr strimlet hval kjøtt
  • 2 ss smør
  • 1 finhakket løk
  • 3 finhakket hvitløks fedd
  • 1 finhakket jalapeno
  • 1 boks hakkede tomater
  • 1 boks salat bønner / brune bønner
  • 3 ss tomat puree
  • 2 ss cumin
  • 2 ss chipotle pulver
  • 1 ss oregano
  • 1 ss røkt paprika
  • 1 ss salt
  • 2 ts pepper
  • 1 ss chipotle in adobo saus
  • 2 dl vann
  • 1 bunt koriander

Instruksjoner:

 

  1. Fres løk, hvitløk, og jalapeño med smør i en kjele.
  2. Fres tørr krydderne sammen med løk mix i kjelen.
  3. Legg til kjøttet og brune på alle sider.
  4. Ta tomat puree inn i pannen og fres.
  5. Hell hakkede tomater, chipotle in adobo saus, og vann.
  6. La koke i en time.
  7. Legg til bønner og korainder og la koke i 5 min.
  8. Smak til med salt.
